Donkey Kong is the very game that Nintendo used to set their original mark on the face of gaming. This was the game that set them apart from the random one-time-wonder arcade games. It was also the first major game from the mastermind Nintendo game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto.
In the game, players take the role of a carpenter by the name of
Jumpman (later to be known as our favorite plumber, Mario). The game's objective is to save Mario's girlfriend and damsel in distress, Pauline, from the clutches of the giant gorilla, Donkey Kong. He must jump over barrels and enemies attempting to attack him, as well as use a hammer to help climb his way up the platforms in order to save his precious Pauline.
As part of the NES Arcade Classics Series, Donkey Kong was later ported to Nintendo's first home console, the
Nintendo Entertainment System. This version of the game retains all of the features from the original, minus coin operation and an arcade game pad.
