Mario Party DS is first of the Mario Party series to appear on the Nintendo DS. As such, many of the minigames involve use of the touch screen, while a few require use of the microphone. Mario Party DS provides a deeper focuses on the single player mode than its predecessors, as the multiplayer aspects of the DS are limited compared to the console games, though still exist.
The main story mode’s gameplay is very similar to the party mode of the other games in the series, but each level has a boss fight at the end of a ten turn game. The method for collecting stars is different depending on which boards are played on. In some cases, the classic method of 20 coins per star still remains, but others have changing prices, points at which players spend as many coins as they can to get up to 20 stars, and one features three spaces that players can open for ten coins. These spaces either contain a star, five coins, a trap that sends players back to the start of the board, or if the player is really unlucky, a ztar, which reduces star counts by 1.
Mario Party DS's story begins when five shining objects known as Sky Crystals fall to the planet. One of the crystals lands next to Mario, who later meets with his friends at Peach’s Castle the next day to inform them of his discovery. After talking, Kamek flies by dropping invitations from Bowser to a party as an apology for “being such a big jerk”, promising a big buffet for the heroes. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong also get the invitations and rush off to Bowser’s Castle just for the free food. Mario and his friends reach the castle first, only to be trapped by Bowser and Bowser Jr., who take the Sky Crystal and use a new wand-like weapon known as the Minimize to shrink the heroes. He then orders Kamek to get rid of them by dumping them someplace far away. The crew regains their composure and decides to gather the remaining Sky Crystals, defeat Bowser, and return to normal.
The game rewards the player's progress with trophies that can be viewed, and stamps to place by the player's profile, both of which are earned at certain point increments, or by accomplishing certain feats. |
