Free Hearts
At the cross-road between Toad Town, Koopa Village and the Koopa Bros. Fortress, there are 3 blue pillars sticking out of the ground. The one furthest to the left will follow Mario with its eyes. If he runs a full lap around this pillar, it will cause it to drop a heart. Continuing to do laps around it will make more hearts appear.

Avoid using FP
If you pull off an FP-consuming attack outside of battle and manage to get a First Strike, that attack will automatically be used in battle without consuming any FP. This also works for Mario's partners' attacks.
Hints
Avoid fighting Buzzar
While traveling across Mt. Rugged, Mario will encounter an enemy called a Buzzar. Buzzar will ask Mario what his name is and the game will give you 3 choices. Reply with Luigi to proceed without a fight. Answering Mario or Peach will force a battle.

Note: Realizing that he had been fooled, Mario will have to fight Buzzar on his way back through Mt. Rugged.
Cameos & Easter Eggs
Luigi's Secret Basement
After obtaining the Super Boots, return to Mario's House via the Pipe in Toad Town. In the Bros.' room there willl be a strange square on the floor, use a spin jump/ground pound above this to enter Luigi's secret basement where his dairy can be found and read.

When starting a new chapter, pause for a moment and the original Super Mario Bros. theme will play shortly after.
