This fighting game, developed by Nintendo and HAL Labs, and designed by Masahiro Sakurai (also known as the creator of Kirby), features characters from various Nintendo franchises, duking it out in various Nintendo-themed stages, using moves and items alike to cut away opponents' health and send them flying. Players start out with 8 characters--Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox McCloud, and Pikachu. Each one having their own unique skills, strengths, and weaknesses, including three special moves. There are also a few hidden characters that can be unlocked.

Unlike most fighting games, players must rack up enough damage on an opponent to later launch and send him/her flying off the screen (similar to a "ring-out" style). Fighting is done with the A Button (regular and smash attacks), the B Button (special moves), and the shoulder buttons (shield). Items sometimes appeared on the stage, which can be used to attack foes or heal yourself. As you take more damage, you become more susceptible to being launched farther and farther. Send the opponent flying off the screen and you will score a KO.

Gameplay has two modes: Time and Stock. In Time, players score and steal points from their opponent by KOing them. When the set time is up, the player with the most points wins. If there is a tie, those involved in the tie will decide the winner through a Sudden Death--that is, they will each have 300% damage, so getting hit once will likely result in a KO. Stock involves all players having a set amount of lives. Once a player loses all lives, they are then out of the match. Whoever is left standing wins.

There is also a single-player mode, in which you can either battle a gauntlet of stages, train against CPU opponents, or enter Bonus Practice.

When Masahiro Sakurai and Shigeru Miyamoto first created this game, it was a prototype made in their spare time called 'Kakuto-Gemu Ryuo' (Dragon King: The Fighting Game), which didn't originally include Nintendo characters. But, Sakurai saw the potential of instead making this fighting game engine with various Nintendo characters, which felt necessary for a home console fighting game. With limited budget and promotion, Super Smash Bros. was originally a Japan-only release, but with its major success, it was pressed on to a worldwide release.

It was later re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console in Japan, Europe, and Australia. The game is schedualed to release in North American later this year.
